From disability to dignity: A journey of courage

Abhishek Gupta

Abhishek Gupta’s story is not just about survival — it’s about rising beyond all odds, redefining success, and becoming an inspiration for anyone facing disability or adversity.

A bright and ambitious student, Abhishek had chosen the science stream after his 10th grade, with a dream of becoming a doctor. But life took a devastating turn in 11th standard when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Due to the tumour’s size and location, doctors predicted two possibilities: death, or a life confined to a bed.

Abhishek underwent a major surgery that saved his life, but left him with lifelong physical challenges. He suffered permanent paralysis on the right side of his body, lost vision in his right eye, and hearing in his right ear. He spent four months in the hospital, undergoing intense treatment and physiotherapy. Though the medical intervention gave him a second chance at life, his dreams were shattered, and for a time, he found himself battling despair. But giving up was never an option for Abhishek.

After a year-long break to recover, he resumed his academic journey — this time shifting to commerce, as continuing science was no longer feasible. He completed his 12th and enrolled in a B.Com program. During his second year, a chance introduction to IIKD Coaching Centre opened the doors to competitive exam preparation — and rekindled his sense of purpose. Abhishek began preparing for government exams with dedication. Despite early failures, he didn’t let setbacks define him. After completing graduation, he took up a job as an HR executive at Mahindra Logistics to support himself — and continued studying relentlessly alongside work.

His persistence paid off. Within just 2.5 years — including his college period — Abhishek cleared SSC MTS, and later SSC CGL, one of India’s most competitive exams. In December 2023, he joined the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, as a Postal Assistant.

But Abhishek’s journey didn’t stop there. He is currently pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration from IGNOU, and preparing for the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination. His aim is not only personal growth but also to serve society at a higher level.

Grateful for his second life, Abhishek believes that disability is not a limitation, but a different path one that demands more resilience, but also builds deeper strength. His journey stands as a beacon of hope for others who feel held back by physical, emotional, or social barriers.

Abhishek Gupta is living proof that with willpower, clarity, and an unshakable mindset, even the harshest trials can be transformed into triumphs.
